“Slow Down Small, My Dollar Reserves All Dey Go Waste” – Kuami Eugene Tells Mahama

Ghanaian highlife sensation Kuami Eugene has made a light-hearted yet revealing appeal to President John Dramani Mahama to “slow down” the cedi’s appreciation against the US dollar, citing its impact on his dollar savings.

In a playful social media post, Kuami Eugene expressed mixed emotions over the rapid strengthening of the local currency.

“We beg Pres. John Mahama for slow down small, my dollar reserves all dey go waste,” he wrote.
“I’m happy and sad at the same time.”

His comment comes at a time when the Ghanaian cedi is seeing significant appreciation, now trading at around GH₵11 to $1—down from about GH₵17 to $1 just a few months ago.

The musician’s comment underscores a broader reality for many Ghanaians who hold savings in foreign currencies. While the cedi’s rebound is generally seen as a positive sign of macroeconomic recovery, it has also meant diminished value for individuals with dollar holdings.

Meanwhile, celebrated Ghanaian actor Van Vicker has publicly commended President Mahama for what he described as a remarkable economic achievement.

In a Facebook post dated Tuesday, May 28, Van Vicker applauded the President’s efforts:

“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo.”

The actor acknowledged various economic theories circulating as possible explanations for the cedi’s rise but emphasised that the outcome is what matters most.

“The true reason could be a consolidation of two or more of—whatever—theories, but be that as it may, the fact remains that the Ghana Cedis is approximately GH₵11 to $1 TODAY. It was approximately GH₵17 to $1 a few months ago,” he wrote.

Van Vicker also took a subtle swipe at critics—particularly Ghanaians living abroad—who may be unhappy with the cedi’s appreciation due to its effect on remittances and dollar-based income.

“This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due,” he stated.

Expressing optimism about the future of the currency, the actor added:

“I think the current cedis orbit is remarkable for Ghana as a country, and I am optimistic it’s sustainable. Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’.”
