SHS Is Not a Beauty Contest — Education Minister On Long Hair

Minister of Education Haruna Iddrisu has firmly dismissed growing calls for senior high school (SHS) students to be allowed to keep long hair, insisting that the country’s secondary school environment is designed for discipline and character formation, not fashion or beauty displays.

Speaking at the 75th anniversary celebration of Mawuli Senior High School in the Volta Region on Saturday, October 25, Mr Iddrisu made it clear that the Ministry and the Ghana Education Service (GES) will not compromise on school grooming standards.

“There is an ongoing debate about haircuts and the size and length of hair in secondary schools. We will not tolerate it today or tomorrow, for as long as we are moulding character,” he declared.

The minister’s remarks follow a viral video that reignited public debate over school grooming rules. The footage showed a female first-year student of Yaa Asantewaa SHS in Kumasi in tears while her mother took her to a barber shop to cut her long natural hair in preparation for school.

The video—posted online by the barber—sparked widespread conversations on social media, radio, and television, with many questioning whether schools should continue enforcing the long-standing rule that requires female students to keep short hair.

However, Mr Iddrisu maintained that relaxing such rules could erode discipline within the education system.

“If we give in to hair today, tomorrow it will be shoes, and the next day it will be the way they dress,” he cautioned.

He urged headmasters and GES authorities to continue enforcing grooming standards without fear, adding that schools are “not cut out for beauty contests.”

“Anybody who thinks their child can walk into an institution of learning as if to attend a beauty pageant should know that the school environment is not for that purpose,” the minister said.
