Tech giants Google and Samsung Electronics have unveiled a new generation of AI-powered smart glasses, marking a renewed push into wearable technology with a strong focus on artificial intelligence integration.
The announcement, made at the Google I/O 2026 on May 19, offered a first look at two intelligent eyewear designs developed in collaboration with fashion-forward spectacle brands Gentle Monster and Warby Parker.
Described by Google as “intelligent eyewear”, the devices are built to seamlessly blend everyday fashion with advanced AI capabilities, signalling what the companies believe is the next major evolution in personal technology.
The glasses will pair with smartphones and run on the Android XR platform, a joint development by Google, Samsung and Qualcomm, designed specifically for extended reality devices.
Two versions of the product are planned. The first, set to launch later this year in selected markets, will focus on audio-based assistance, delivering spoken information directly into the user’s ear. The second, more advanced iteration will incorporate visual overlays, projecting real-time information into the user’s field of vision.
Both models will be powered by Google’s AI service, Gemini, enabling a range of features including real-time translation, hands-free message reading, location-based recommendations such as restaurant reviews, and remote control of an integrated camera.
Speaking on the development, Samsung’s executive vice president and head of customer experience for its Mobile eXperience division, Jay Kim, described the innovation as a significant milestone in the company’s broader AI strategy.
“This is an important step in our vision for AI,” he said, noting that the glasses expand the Galaxy ecosystem by introducing a new form factor tailored to deliver unique, context-aware experiences.
Google’s Vice President and General Manager for Android XR, Shahram Izadi, echoed this sentiment, stating that the devices represent “a powerful step forward” in making AI more accessible and useful in everyday life.
The move marks a renewed attempt by Google to establish a foothold in the smart eyewear market, more than a decade after the launch of Google Glass, which struggled to gain mainstream adoption before being discontinued in 2023.
However, industry dynamics have shifted significantly since then. Advances in AI, miniaturisation of hardware, and changing consumer behaviour have reignited interest in smart glasses.
According to recent data from Counterpoint Research, global shipments of smart glasses surged by 139 per cent year-on-year in the second half of 2025. The market is currently dominated by Meta Platforms, which holds an 82 per cent share, driven largely by its popular Ray-Ban smart glasses developed in partnership with Luxottica.
With competition intensifying and AI rapidly reshaping consumer technology, the latest collaboration between Google and Samsung signals a strategic bid to reclaim leadership in a category once considered ahead of its time, but now firmly back in the spotlight.
