Rashid Tanko Computer: “It Will Take Time to Replace a Personality Like Dr. Omane Boamah” (VIDEO)

Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Investment Fund for Electronic Communications (GIFEC) and National Deputy Director of Elections and IT for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Rashid Tanko Computer, has described the late Defence Minister, Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah, as an irreplaceable figure in the party and national governance.

In an exclusive interview with puretvonline.com, Rashid Tanko revealed the immense impact Dr. Omane Boamah had on the NDC, both intellectually and strategically, stating that his death has created a vacuum that will be difficult to fill.

“Dr. Omane Boamah was not just a minister. He was a walking encyclopedia of governance and political strategy. His intelligence and lectures were unmatched, and it will take time—perhaps a long time—for the party to find someone with his caliber,” he said solemnly.

Tanko further disclosed that he had spoken with Dr. Omane Boamah just hours before the fatal crash that claimed his life. According to him, their last conversation took place around 9:00 am on Wednesday, August 6, 2025, as they discussed key plans for the upcoming Akwatia by-election.

“Little did I know that just two hours after our conversation, I would receive news of his passing. We were in the middle of planning a strong electoral strategy. His mind was sharp, his vision clear, and his commitment to the party unquestionable,” he lamented.

Dr. Omane Boamah died in a tragic military helicopter crash in Adansi Akrofuom in the Ashanti Region, along with seven others who were onboard the ill-fated aircraft. The incident has plunged the nation into deep mourning.

Tanko, who worked closely with Dr. Omane Boamah on election strategies within the NDC, emphasized that the late minister’s teachings in political communication and election management were “impeccable and unmatched.”

“I have never seen a man like this. He was down to earth and exceptionally brainy. This was the man behind many of the NDC’s electoral successes. His death is a heavy blow, not just to the party, but to Ghana as a whole,” he said.

The late Dr. Omane Boamah was widely known for his pivotal role in shaping the NDC’s electoral strategies and digital communication agenda, especially during crucial national elections. Tanko’s tribute reflects the profound personal and professional loss many in the party are grappling with.

He also extended his sorrow to the other fallen statesmen, including Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed, whom he described as another “gallant figure” whose death is equally painful.

“It is really sorrowful; it is really sorrowful. We don’t know where to start. Losing such quality lives is devastating. It has hit us hard as a government and as a party,” he stressed.

The eight individuals who lost their lives in the helicopter crash include:

Civilian Officials:

  • Dr. Edward Kofi Omane Boamah – Minister for Defence
  • Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Mohammed – MP and Minister for Environment, Science, and Technology
  • Muniru Mohammed Lemunade – Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator and former Minister for Food and Agriculture
  • Dr. Samuel Sarpong – Vice Chair of the National Democratic Congress
  • Mr. Samuel Aboagye – Former parliamentary candidate and Deputy Director-General of NADMO

Military Officers:

  • Squadron Leader Peter Bafimi Anala
  • Flying Officer Manim Twum Ampadu
  • Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensa

In a solemn national address, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah confirmed the tragedy and announced that all national flags would be flown at half-mast in honor of the departed.

“I have the unpleasant duty, sadly, to announce a national tragedy involving the crash of a military helicopter in the Adansi area of the Ashanti Region,” Debrah stated. “The President and government extend our condolences and sympathies to the families of our comrades and the servicemen who died in service to the country.”

The Ghana National Fire Service has since launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Preliminary efforts have already retrieved the flight data and cockpit voice recorders, as military and aviation experts work to uncover the cause of the crash of the Chinese-made Z-9 helicopter.

As Ghana mourns the tragic loss of eight national heroes, voices like Rashid Tanko Computer’s serve as a testament to the legacy and impact of those who gave their lives in service to the nation.

“Though he is gone, Dr. Omane Boamah’s legacy will continue to guide us. He was a symbol of hope, strategy, and brilliance. We owe it to his memory to carry on his work,” Tanko concluded.
