Randy Abbey Sues Abronye DC for GHS 20m Over Defamation
The Acting Chief Executive Officer of COCOBOD and respected broadcaster, Dr Randy Abbey, has filed a GHS 20 million defamation lawsuit against Kwame Baffoe, popularly known as Abronye DC, the outspoken Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The lawsuit, filed on August 26, 2025, stems from statements made by Abronye during a public broadcast and later circulated on social media, accusing Dr Abbey of abusing public resources and engaging in corruption.
In his remarks, Abronye alleged that Dr Abbey:

- Misused COCOBOD resources, including multiple Land Cruisers, to transport a personal chair from Accra to cocoa farms.
- Refused to sit on chairs provided by farmers during visits.
- Manipulated internal appointments within COCOBOD to enable embezzlement of public funds.
According to court filings by COCOBOD’s Legal Department, the comments are false, malicious, and defamatory, injuring Dr Abbey’s reputation and exposing him to public ridicule and contempt.
The suit demands:
- A declaration that Abronye’s statements are defamatory.
- A full retraction and unqualified apology published across all platforms.
- Removal of all defamatory content from the internet.
- General, punitive, and compensatory damages totalling GHS 20 million.
- A perpetual injunction restraining Abronye from making similar remarks.
- Payment of legal costs.
Dr Abbey maintains that the allegations are entirely false and intended to tarnish his professional reputation. His legal team stressed that political commentary and public discourse must remain truthful and responsible, particularly when directed at individuals entrusted with public office.
This lawsuit follows a similar action in July 2025, when Hugh Clement A. Brown, Acting Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission, also sued Abronye DC for GHS 20 million in damages over defamatory remarks.
As of press time, Abronye DC has not issued any public response to the latest lawsuit.
