Police Vow to Arrest Thugs Behind Ablekuma North Election Violence

The Accra Regional Police Command has pledged swift action to identify and prosecute all individuals involved in violent incidents during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun held on Friday, July 11, 2025.

In a press release dated July 12 and signed by Superintendent Juliana Obeng, Head of Public Affairs, the Command acknowledged that “isolated incidents of violence” were recorded at some polling stations, temporarily disrupting an otherwise peaceful election.

“The Regional Command is taking steps to identify perpetrators, and anyone found to have engaged in acts of violence, intimidation, or breach of the peace will be arrested and taken through the due process of law,” the statement emphasised.

Chaos erupted at Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station, one of 19 voting centres involved in the rerun. According to eyewitnesses, a group of unidentified thugs arrived in a pickup truck, stormed the premises, and physically assaulted voters and election officials, despite the presence of multiple police officers.

Among those attacked was former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Hawa Koomson, who, according to TV3’s Stanley Nii Blewu, was kicked in the groin and continued to be beaten while on the ground before police intervened to rescue her.

A JoyNews journalist was also reportedly assaulted while filming the altercation. Several others sustained injuries during the melee.

“The police officers, despite being many at the premises, could not prevent the attack and foil the chaos,” Stanley reported.

The Police Command has urged the public to provide any information that may assist in identifying the assailants. Citizens are encouraged to reach out via emergency numbers 18555 or 191.

“We are determined to pursue justice and restore confidence in our electoral process,” Supt. Obeng stated.

The rerun follows a disputed collation process from the December 2024 parliamentary election, where 37 original pink sheets were reportedly destroyed during a disruption at the collation centre.

The Electoral Commission (EC) relied on scanned copies—submitted by the New Patriotic Party (NPP)—to complete the tally. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) rejected this, demanding a full rerun in all 37 affected polling stations.

The EC ultimately agreed to a rerun in 19 polling stations after political negotiations, setting the stage for Friday’s election.

The violence has triggered renewed calls for enhanced election security, especially in politically volatile constituencies. Analysts warn that failure to ensure justice could deepen mistrust in Ghana’s democratic institutions ahead of the 2026 general elections.

The Accra Regional Police Command says it will update the public on arrests and progress in the coming days as investigations continue.
