Police Retrieve Blood-Stained Weapons Linked to Slain Immigration Officer

The Ghana Police Service has disclosed harrowing findings from a forensic investigation into the murder of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, whose charred remains were discovered in a gutter near the GBC Satellite area opposite Comet Estate in Accra on July 9, 2025.

Amoah, who was stationed at the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) headquarters, had been declared missing five days earlier on July 4, prompting a nationwide search.

At a press briefing on Monday, August 4, Director General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, gave a detailed breakdown of the events and evidence that led to the reclassification of the case from kidnapping to murder.

According to COP Donkor, investigators were first led to the suspect’s residence, where disturbing forensic evidence was uncovered:

  • Blood stains were found in the living room, with visible signs of attempted cleaning.
  • Walls had been freshly painted, and an empty can of spray paint was recovered.
  • A second crime scene near the GBC Satellite area yielded a burnt wooden carpet stained with blood and partially burnt camouflage fabric.

“These items were all photographed, retrieved, and processed for forensic analysis,” COP Donkor stated.

Further searches on July 24, authorised by a court warrant, led police to additional discoveries:

  • More blood stains, referred to as “blast stains”, were found in a concealed section of the house.
  • In nearby bushes, about 100 metres from the suspect’s home, police recovered a fufu pestle wrapped in polythene, stained heavily with blood.

Investigators also examined the suspect’s vehicle, where blood samples were found and collected for DNA testing.

In a significant forensic breakthrough, initial blood samples tested positive for human blood. To establish a definitive connection to the deceased officer, the police have obtained DNA samples from Amoah’s mother and son for profiling.

The prime suspect, Bright Aweh, had originally been charged with kidnapping shortly after Amoah was reported missing. But with mounting forensic evidence linking him to the crime, Aweh has been re-arrested and formally charged with murder.

He has since been remanded into custody by the Adabraka District Court and is expected to reappear on August 8, 2025.

COP Donkor concluded by assuring the public that the investigation remains active and expansive. A special operation is ongoing to locate and apprehend Aweh’s possible accomplices.

“We are following other vital leads to gather all necessary evidence against the suspect and his accomplices,” she said.

The CID is urging anyone with information related to the case to contact the police immediately, as the service intensifies efforts to bring all perpetrators to justice in what is now considered one of the most brutal targeted killings of a security officer in recent years.
