Police Officers Celebrate Over Dampare’s Dismissal

A wave of excitement has swept through the Ghana Police Service following the appointment of Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP).

Officers have been celebrating his leadership, expressing optimism about a fresh direction for the service.

IGP Yohuno was officially sworn in by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

Shortly after his swearing-in, he visited the police headquarters, where he was met with loud cheers, praise, and even an extravagant display of affection from officers.

In a striking show of support, some jubilant personnel were seen spraying money on the newly appointed IGP, a rare gesture symbolising approval and excitement for his leadership.

However, the celebrations also came with harsh criticism of the former police chief, Dr. Dampare. Some officers branded him a “tyrant” and a “dictator,” claiming his removal had “freed” the service from oppressive leadership. Their reactions suggest a deep-seated dissatisfaction with his tenure and heightened expectations for change under IGP Yohuno.

This leadership transition is part of a broader restructuring effort aimed at reinforcing law enforcement and strengthening public safety across the country. As IGP Yohuno assumes office, all eyes will be on how he steers the Ghana Police Service into a new era.
