Petroleum Hub in Jomoro to Create Over 800,000 Jobs – Dr Tony Aubynn
The Chief Executive Officer of the Petroleum Hub Development Corporation (PHDC), Dr Tony Aubynn, has announced plans by the government to construct a state-of-the-art petroleum hub in Jomoro, located in the Western Region.
The project, which is expected to significantly curb unemployment, is projected to provide over 800,000 jobs for Ghanaians.
Speaking in an exclusive one-on-one interview on Hot FM Morning Drive with the host Don Kwabena Prah, Dr Aubynn outlined the ambitious components of the hub, including the construction of three oil refineries, two jetties to facilitate the import and export of refined oil, and tank farms with a storage capacity of 900 million barrels. The development will also feature quaternary hospitals, hotels, and other critical infrastructure that will contribute to the formation of an entirely new township.

“This is not just an oil project. We are essentially building a new city, one that will transform the socio-economic fabric of the Jomoro area and beyond,” he said.
Dr Aubynn acknowledged that the initiative was originally conceived under the previous administration and praised President John Dramani Mahama for ensuring continuity of the project, in recognition of its national importance.
“This is a visionary initiative, and I’m pleased that the current government is continuing with it. Governance is a continuous process, and good projects like this must not be abandoned,” he noted.
According to the PHDC boss, the petroleum hub will be one of the first of its kind in Africa, positioning Ghana among global leaders in energy infrastructure alongside countries like the Netherlands (Rotterdam), Malaysia, and Canada.
He further highlighted Ghana’s geographical advantage as a prime reason for the hub’s location.
“Ghana lies at the centre of the earth, making us a strategic location for global trade. This hub will attract international players and make us a key player in the global petroleum value chain,” he stated.
Dr Aubynn added that, beyond job creation, the hub will boost Ghana’s refining capacity, allowing hydrocarbons such as crude oil and petrol to be processed into finished products locally. This will also enhance the country’s ability to store refined fuels for future economic or supply shocks.
“We are building resilience into our energy system. The petroleum hub will allow Ghana to refine, store, and export fuel products efficiently while creating massive employment opportunities for our youth,” he concluded.
The petroleum hub project is expected to be one of the largest industrial undertakings in Ghana’s history and a key pillar in the nation’s energy and economic transformation agenda.
