Petition Filed to Remove EC Chairperson Jean Mensa and Deputies

President John Dramani Mahama has been petitioned to remove the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa, along with her deputies, Samuel Tetteh and Dr. Bossman Eric Asare, and EC member Dr. Peter Appiahene.

The petition, filed on January 27, alleges constitutional breaches, incompetence, bias, and actions that undermine public confidence in the Commission. Key accusations include the disenfranchisement of voters in Santrokofi, Akpafu, Likpe, and Lolobi (SALL) during the 2020 parliamentary elections, which the petitioner claims violated citizens’ rights under Article 42 of the 1992 Constitution.

The petition highlights that SALL residents were deprived of parliamentary representation for over four years, potentially influencing the balance of power in the hung parliament during the 2020 elections.

“For over four years, the people of SALL were deprived of their constitutional right to parliamentary representation, leaving them without a voice in the legislative process. The disenfranchisement suggests partisan bias and an attempt to influence the balance of power in Parliament,” the petitioner argued.

Other allegations include:

  • Mismanagement of the 2020 elections: Errors in the presidential election results and last-minute decisions affecting electoral arrangements.
  • Partisanship: Claims of overt bias by Dr. Bossman Asare and Dr. Peter Appiahene, including social media posts critical of the opposition party.

The petition calls on President Mahama to act under Article 146 of the Constitution, emphasising the need to restore public confidence in Ghana’s electoral process.

This is not the first time Jean Mensa has faced similar petitions. Previous challenges, including those in August 2020 and August 2022, were dismissed or unresolved.

The presidency has yet to comment on the latest petition.
