The Member of Parliament for Korle Klottey, Dr Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has urged couples and individuals preparing for marriage to focus less on the glamour of weddings and more on the reality of living together.
Speaking on JoyNews’ Talk No Dey Cook Rice podcast, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings observed that many people invest heavily in appearances for society and family but fail to prepare for the daily demands of married life.
“I get the impression that sometimes when people are thinking about marriage, it’s the preparation towards it more than the actual journey of being married that people seem to focus on,” she said.
She described marriage as “constant work”, likening it to a partnership or contract that requires commitment, communication, and shared responsibility. “You can’t just leave it and expect that it will fix itself,” she stressed.
According to her, couples must learn each other’s “language” in communication, be upfront about their true selves, and establish common values to manage issues such as money and household chores.
While acknowledging the sacred role of marriage in starting families, Dr Agyeman-Rawlings cautioned that there are no guarantees. “Even with the best of intentions, a marriage can just not work. It’s a risk. You hope for the best, but you just never know.”
