Aggrieved Kusasi youth have strongly criticised President John Dramani Mahama over what they describe as his failure to fulfil a key campaign promise to resolve the long-running Bawku conflict.
At a press briefing, the youth accused the president of neglecting their plight, despite receiving overwhelming support from the Kusaug area in the last election. They say their hopes for peace have been shattered by worsening violence in the region, which has reportedly claimed over 18 lives — including women and children — since Mahama assumed office three months ago.
“Mr President, when we heard your promise to bring a lasting solution to the Bawku conflict, we were filled with hope and believed the NDC would be our saviour. That is why Kusaug gave the NPP zero votes and supported the NDC massively,” the group said.

They questioned what had changed since Mahama openly recognised Naana Asigri Azorka II as the legitimate chief of Kusaug — a move that once brought them optimism. “We did not expect it would take this long to address the Bawku issue after we voted you into power,” they lamented.
Beyond broken promises, the group alleged that the conflict is now being exploited for political purposes. “We have now come to the painful realisation that politicians have been using the Bawku conflict for their own selfish political interests. They continue to deceive us with empty promises of peace simply to win votes,” they said.
Issuing a stark warning ahead of the 2028 general elections, the youth suggested that voter apathy may be their next course of action. “It will come as a surprise to politicians when they see empty ballot boxes in 2028, with not a single vote cast. We are tired of the lies and broken promises,” they concluded.
