Paul Afoko Declares Comeback Bid for NPP National Chairmanship
Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Afoko, has officially announced his intention to contest for the party’s National Chairmanship position in the upcoming national officers’ election — marking a dramatic return to the party’s frontline politics after nearly a decade.
In a statement titled “Declaration of Intention to Contest the National Chairmanship Position of the New Patriotic Party”, Mr Afoko said his decision comes after “extensive reflection and encouragement” from party members and stakeholders who have expressed a strong desire for renewed leadership and inclusivity within the NPP.
“After extensive reflection and encouragement from many well-meaning members, supporters, and stakeholders of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), I am honoured to formally announce my intention to contest for the position of National Chairman in the upcoming election of national officers,” he stated.

Mr Afoko explained that his comeback bid is inspired by a commitment to restore the party’s founding democratic ideals, promote internal cohesion, and rebuild trust among the grassroots.
“This decision has not been taken lightly. It comes after careful consideration and in response to the consistent calls for renewed leadership rooted in the founding values and democratic ideals of our party,” he said.
He pledged to steer the NPP toward unity and inclusivity, saying his goal is to ensure that every member feels valued and heard as the party prepares for future elections.
“While the journey has not been without its trials, I have always chosen to prioritise the unity and progress of the NPP above all else. My focus now, as it has always been, is on the future—one where our party stands re-energised, inclusive, and better positioned to deliver on its promise to the Ghanaian people,” he added.
The former chairman revealed plans to engage party members across the country in the coming weeks to share his vision for transparent, accountable, and values-driven leadership.
“In the coming weeks, I will engage more broadly with party faithful and the media to share my vision, ideas, and plans to lead the NPP with integrity, transparency, and a renewed sense of purpose. Let us look ahead together,” he noted.
Paul Afoko’s return to the political limelight follows his suspension in 2015 as the NPP’s National Chairman by the party’s National Executive Committee at an emergency meeting in Accra.
His suspension stemmed from a petition by the Council of Elders, which accused him of actions considered detrimental to the then-flagbearer Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo’s 2016 campaign. The party’s Disciplinary Committee later recommended the suspension after Mr Afoko allegedly failed to appear before it on multiple occasions.
Despite the controversy, Afoko maintained his loyalty to the NPP, often describing his political journey as a “commitment to principle, not position.”
His declaration now sets the stage for an intense contest for the NPP’s national chairmanship, as the party seeks to rebuild and strategise for the next general election.
