“Over Our Dead Bodies”: CMB Drivers and Traders Vow to Resist Eviction, Petition Mahama

Accra’s bustling CMB lorry station was thrown into turmoil on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, as angry drivers and traders staged a massive protest against what they described as an orchestrated attempt to seize their land. The demonstrators, made up of multiple transport unions and traders’ associations, vowed never to vacate the land they have occupied for decades—unless forced out violently.

The protest followed weeks of tension after reports emerged that a chief from Akim Wenchi was attempting to claim ownership of the station’s remaining lands, allegedly paving the way for private developers.

At the heart of the demonstration was the acting National President of the Commercial Drivers Association (CDA), Asonaba Nana Wiredu, who delivered a fiery message to the press:

“We won’t allow him to take the remaining land unless he kills us. From 1985 up to date, we have documents from the Ghana Railway authorities that the settlers on that particular land are transport operators, GPRTU, and petty traders.”

The demonstration began at the Ridge Roundabout and ended at the Jubilee House, where protesters presented a strongly worded petition to President John Dramani Mahama.

The petition was received by Bridget Otto, a presidential staffer in charge of government communication, who assured the demonstrators that the government would treat their concerns with “the seriousness they deserve”.

The protest drew an unusual alliance of transport and traders’ groups, including the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), the Concerned Drivers Association, the Commercial Transport Operators, and the Container Owners Association.

According to leaders of the groups, the CMB station—one of Accra’s busiest transport and trading hubs—has been the lifeline of thousands of drivers, porters, food vendors, and traders for nearly four decades.

“We are not just defending land; we are defending our livelihood, our families, and our survival,” one protester shouted during the march.

The controversy threatens to escalate into open confrontation if no swift resolution is reached. Drivers and traders say the alleged attempts to push them out amount to “land grabbing” and accuse the authorities of looking on while private interests encroach on public property.
