Over 80% court cases delay Ofankor-Nsawam road completion

The Ministry of Roads and Highways has attributed delays in the completion of the Ofankor-Nsawam road project to ongoing court cases that have significantly stalled progress.

Originally set for completion by July 2024, the $350 million infrastructure project is now facing an indefinite delay due to unresolved legal disputes.

Nasir Ahmad Yartey, Public Relations Officer for the Ministry, spoke about the challenges on the Citi Breakfast Show on Monday, explaining that the legal disputes have slowed down the contractor’s ability to carry out key construction tasks.

He revealed that the project is currently bogged down by numerous court cases, many of which involve property owners challenging demolition orders or seeking compensation.

“Last year, we had over 100 court cases related to the project, and we’ve been able to clear about 20 of them. As of now, between Amasaman and Nsawam, there are around 80 cases that are still ongoing. These cases prevent the contractor from accessing the right of way, which has caused significant delays in the project,” said Yartey.

The Ofankor-Nsawam road project is a key development aimed at improving transportation along the busy Accra-Kumasi highway. Once completed, the road will help ease traffic congestion, boost commerce, and provide safer travel for the increasing number of commuters who rely on the route.

However, residents and commuters who use the road daily have expressed growing frustration over the delays, with many pointing to worsening traffic jams and the economic strain caused by the stagnation of the project. The delays are also taking a toll on the overall development of the region.

With the completion of the road now uncertain, there are increasing calls for the government to expedite the resolution of the court cases to allow work to resume. Many are urging that the legal issues be resolved quickly so that the road project can proceed and provide much-needed improvements to the area’s transportation infrastructure.
