Over 600,000 Candidates Set to Write BECE Exams

The Director-General of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Professor Ernest Kofi Davis, has assured the public that the country is fully prepared to conduct this year’s Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE), scheduled from Wednesday, June 11, to Wednesday, June 18, 2025.

Speaking at a media briefing in Accra on Monday, Prof. Davis said that in collaboration with the West African Examinations Council (WAEC), all logistics had been put in place for a smooth and successful examination process across the nation.

A total of 603,328 candidates are expected to participate in the exams—306,078 females and 297,250 males.

“All materials, including timetables, have already been dispatched to schools and all metropolitan, municipal, and district education offices,” Prof. Davis disclosed.

He explained that two subjects will be written each day, with papers starting at 9:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m., respectively. Candidates will sit for an average of nine subjects, including seven core courses: English Language, Mathematics, Science, Ghanaian Language, Social Studies, Religious and Moral Education, Creative Art and Design, and Career Technology.

Private candidates will take their exams at designated centres in Tema, Gambaga, and the regional capitals, he noted.

To maintain the integrity of the exams, GES and WAEC will jointly supervise the process with support from the Ghana Police Service and other security agencies.

Prof. Davis issued a stern warning to invigilators and supervisors, cautioning them against aiding malpractice. “Anyone found culpable will face severe consequences, including possible dismissal,” he said. “We want our students to look up to positive role models.”

He also urged stakeholders—parents, teachers, and the public—to support efforts aimed at eliminating cheating, emphasising that success must come through merit.

“To the candidates: Do not depend on ‘apor’. “That’s not the kind of education Ghana is building,” Prof. Davis said. “If you apply yourselves and prepare well, you will excel. I believe in you and wish all candidates the very best in their exams.”
