NHIA Commends President Mahama for Uncapping National Health Insurance Fund

The National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA) has hailed President John Dramani Mahama for his decisive leadership in uncapping the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIF), a policy shift expected to significantly enhance healthcare accessibility in Ghana.

During his 2025 budget presentation in Parliament on Tuesday, March 11, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson announced the move, stating, “Mr. Speaker, we have uncapped the National Health Insurance Levy (NHIL). An amount of GH¢9.93 billion has been programmed for the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) for claim payments, essential medicines, vaccine payments, free primary healthcare, the Ghana Medical Care Trust (MahamaCares), and bridging the USAID financing shortfall.”

In a statement dated March 11, 2025, NHIA CEO Dr. Victor Asare Bampoe described the decision as a landmark step toward ensuring sustainable and accessible healthcare for all Ghanaians.

He emphasised that the increased funds will strengthen healthcare services, expand NHIS coverage, and improve efficiency within the scheme.

The uncapping of the NHIF marks a major policy achievement and fulfils a key campaign promise by the administration. The move is expected to enhance access to medical care, reduce financial constraints on healthcare providers, and create a more robust and responsive healthcare system for millions of Ghanaians.
