MultiChoice Requested 30 Days, But 14 is Enough – Sam George on Subscription Price Cuts

The Minister of Communications, Digital Technology, and Innovation, Samuel Nartey George, has announced that MultiChoice Ghana has agreed to reduce its subscription prices, but the company is requesting a 30-day window to determine the percentage cut.

Speaking at a press briefing on Friday, September 5, the minister revealed that MultiChoice formally reached out to the ministry and the National Communications Authority (NCA) on Thursday to signal its readiness to engage in negotiations after weeks of regulatory pressure.

“We’ve taken a decision to immediately establish a stakeholder committee comprising representatives from the Ministry of Communication, the regulator, which is the NCA, MultiChoice Ghana, and MultiChoice Africa. I will personally chair the committee,” Mr George said.

He confirmed that while MultiChoice requested 30 days for the committee to complete its work, the government is insisting on a shorter timeline.

“I believe that we do not need 30 days. Fourteen days is enough for us to reach this decision, inclusive of weekends,” he stated, stressing that the committee must deliver a new price structure by September 21, 2025.

The development follows weeks of tension between the government and MultiChoice over the high cost of pay-TV subscriptions in Ghana compared to other African markets. On August 4, the NCA demanded that the operator submit a detailed cost breakdown of its bouquet pricing in Ghana and seven other countries.

MultiChoice initially resisted the directive but eventually complied. Its failure to meet the earlier deadline attracted daily fines of GH¢10,000 from August 14. Additionally, the company faced a 30-day suspension notice effective August 7.

However, Mr George confirmed that the suspension threat would not take effect as long as negotiations continue in good faith.

The minister underscored that the government remains committed to protecting Ghanaian consumers from unfair pricing. He said the pricing review committee would ensure that any adjustments are “evidence-based, transparent, and fair to all parties.”

“This is about ensuring that Ghanaian households receive value for money without compromising the viability of MultiChoice’s operations. We will work constructively but with urgency,” he emphasised.
