Telecom giant MTN Ghana has fully restored its data bundle purchase systems after a technical breakdown marred the July 1 launch of its new 15% bonus data packages, part of sweeping reforms in Ghana’s telecommunications sector.
The glitch struck on the same day all major operators were required to roll out enhanced data offers in line with new directives from the Ministry of Communication, Digital Technology and Innovations.
In a late-night statement, MTN confirmed that by 11:00 p.m. on July 1, data bundle purchases were once again functional through its core channels: 138#, 170#, *567#, and the myMTN App.

“MTN is pleased to inform our cherished customers that we have restored our data bundle purchase channels,” the company announced. “We truly appreciate your patience and understanding during this period.”
However, MTN noted that bundle purchases via the MoMo app remain temporarily disabled, with efforts ongoing to restore full functionality.
The disruption came at a critical moment as Ghana ushered in a new era of data affordability and value. MTN was expected to restore its GH¢399 bundle to 214GB, reversing a controversial reduction, and apply a 15% bonus across all bundles — a requirement under the government’s newly enforced pricing guidelines.
While MTN scrambled to address its system failure, rival networks Telecel Ghana and AT Ghana launched their upgraded bundles without incident.
- Telecel’s GH¢400 package now delivers 250GB (up from 90GB).
- AT Ghana boosted its offer to 236 GB, up from 195 GB.
Both networks also rolled out 10% bonus data for all packages.
Communications Minister Samuel Nartey George, architect of the reforms, welcomed the overall compliance but underscored the need for continuous monitoring and enforcement.
“The increases are going to come at considerable costs to the network operators. However, I am glad that our engagements and consultations are bearing fruit for the Ghanaian people,” he said.
The National Communications Authority (NCA) has been tasked with quarterly billing audits and oversight to ensure fair implementation and accurate billing across all networks.
Despite the hiccup, MTN’s system restoration means that subscribers across all three major networks can now enjoy bigger bundles at no additional cost, with improved transparency and customer focus.
The July 1 reforms mark a turning point in Ghana’s digital access agenda, signalling a renewed commitment to affordable, equitable internet access in a rapidly evolving digital economy.
