The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has unveiled a series of initiatives aimed at improving infrastructure, governance, and academic standards within Ghana’s Colleges of Education.
Speaking at the inauguration of seven newly constituted governing councils in Sunyani, the minister announced that Ghana now has 48 public colleges of education funded by the taxpayer. These include the Savannah College of Education, Ghana Muslim Mission College in Beposo, Christ the Teacher College in Nsoko, McCoy College, Bagabaga College, Jahan College, Gambaga College, Tamale College, Atebubu College, EP Training College, and Bimbilla College.

Mr Iddrisu revealed that the Ghana Tertiary Education Commission (GTEC) has been directed to complete absorption processes for three of the colleges, ensuring their full integration into the public tertiary system.
On infrastructure, the minister lamented delays in hostel projects that were initiated in 2023 to address acute accommodation shortages. Out of 45 hostels planned across 46 colleges, only nine have made significant progress, while 11 are seeing steady work and 25 remain stalled.
To resolve this, the government has cancelled the contracts for the stalled projects and will re-award them, with GHS 403 million allocated under the GETFund to ensure timely completion.
Mr Iddrisu further disclosed that all 48 colleges are transitioning into full university status, a move that will affect staff conditions of service and require legislative adjustments. He said GTEC is working with the Attorney General’s Department to amend the enabling act, with changes expected to be finalised during the next sitting of Parliament.
He also urged governing councils to collaborate closely with GTEC, especially in making key appointments, noting that about 20 principals are set to retire or complete their terms next year.
“The Ministry of Education remains committed to ensuring a smooth transition and providing the necessary support to enhance tertiary education in Ghana,” the minister assured.
