MenzGold Customers Demand Fast-Tracking of NAM1 Trial After Seven Years of Delays

The Coalition of Aggrieved Customers of MenzGold (CACM) has appealed to the Acting Chief Justice to urgently resume and accelerate the long-delayed criminal trial of MenzGold Chief Executive Officer, Nana Appiah Mensah, also known as NAM1.

In a statement issued on Friday, September 12, to mark seven years since the collapse of MenzGold, the group expressed deep frustration over what it described as the snail-paced prosecution of the embattled CEO.

“The ongoing criminal prosecution, even though started on a speedy trial, latest developments show that it is going at a snail’s pace,” the statement read. “We would like to call on the respected Chief Justice and the courts to ensure that the trial resumes on a daily basis so that justice will be served within a reasonable time.”

The group warned that the slow progress of the case has worsened the suffering of thousands of customers in Ghana and abroad, many of whom lost life savings in the collapsed gold dealership scheme.

“It is, however, sad to report that since the collapse of MenzGold 7 years ago, not less than 240 customers have lost their lives, some ending their lives through suicide, whilst many customers are down with several degrees of sickness and diseases,” the coalition noted.

The CACM stressed that the prolonged delays have deepened the emotional and financial trauma of victims and urged the judiciary to prioritise the case to restore public confidence in the justice system.

Meanwhile, in May this year, the Court of Appeal dismissed an application by NAM1 seeking to halt his ongoing criminal trial. The application had been filed pending the determination of an appeal challenging a High Court ruling that directed him to open his defence.

In 2024, the High Court ordered NAM1 to respond to multiple criminal charges, including the sale of gold without a licence, fraudulent breach of trust, defrauding by false pretence, and money laundering. His legal team subsequently filed an appeal to overturn the ruling, but the appellate court rejected the request, clearing the way for the trial to continue.

The CACM has vowed to keep pushing until justice is served for all affected customers.
