McDan Foundation Supports 7,000 Widows at La Outreach

The McDan Foundation, in partnership with the RIDNE Consortium, has provided relief to approximately 7,000 widows through its annual Widows Support Project held at the La Town Park on April 10, 2026.

The large-scale outreach delivered essential food items, including rice, gari, pasta, biscuits, bottled water, and assorted drinks, aimed at easing the immediate economic pressures faced by beneficiaries and their households.

Beyond food distribution, the initiative incorporated a comprehensive healthcare component. Widows received free medical screenings, such as blood pressure checks, diabetes testing, eye and hearing assessments, as well as bone and joint examinations. Mental health consultations were also offered, alongside BMI and nutritional checks. Medications were provided at no cost, ensuring beneficiaries received both preventive and curative care.

With an estimated cost of GHC 1 million, the intervention is among the largest private-led social support initiatives targeting widows in Ghana. It reflects a growing role of corporate and philanthropic institutions in addressing welfare challenges, particularly for vulnerable groups.

While the project brought significant relief and improved access to essential services, it also highlights broader concerns about sustainability. The reliance on periodic charitable interventions underscores the need for more structured and long-term social protection systems.

Although initiatives like this continue to restore hope and dignity, they also serve as a reminder that lasting change requires consistent policy action and institutional support to ensure that vulnerable populations are not left dependent on occasional acts of goodwill.
