President John Dramani Mahama’s renewed vow to construct a bridge over the Afram River—from Adawso to Ekye Amanfrom—has once again stirred a mix of hope and scepticism among residents of the Kwawu Afram Plains.
The latest pledge, delivered during his ongoing campaign tour, is not the first time Mr. Mahama has made such a commitment. He previously promised the same project during his tenure as president between 2013 and 2017—a promise that remained unfulfilled. Similar assurances have also been made by former presidents Jerry John Rawlings and John Agyekum Kufuor, none of which materialised.
The proposed 3.6-kilometre bridge is seen as a transformative infrastructure project capable of unlocking the agricultural and economic potential of the Afram Plains, a fertile region often described as Ghana’s breadbasket. The bridge would cross Afram Lake, a key section of the Volta River system formed by the Akosombo Dam in the 1960s.

Development analysts say the project is vital to a broader 100-kilometre road corridor expected to link the Eastern, Ashanti, and Bono regions—facilitating trade, transportation, and integration between key farming and commercial zones.
Public reactions to Mahama’s latest commitment have been mixed. Speaking to Adom News, some residents expressed cautious optimism, viewing the re-pledge as a possible turning point. Others, however, remain unconvinced, citing a long history of political promises that have yielded little tangible progress.
Adding momentum to the discussion, District Chief Executive for Kwawu Afram Plains South, Moses Tangmee, assured residents that the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) has now secured funding for the long-awaited project.
He argued that the bridge would spur regional development, boost incomes, and create new opportunities in agriculture and trade.
Tangmee further alleged that the previous New Patriotic Party (NPP) administration misused funds originally allocated for the bridge’s construction, redirecting them to unrelated projects.
He added that a future Mahama-led NDC government would not only complete the bridge but also launch a full-scale investigation to bring those responsible for any financial misappropriation to justice.
