Mahama pledges ultramodern market to boost Savelugu’s economy

Former President John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has promised to construct an ultramodern market in Savelugu, located in Ghana’s Northern Region, if he is elected in the 2024 presidential race.

Speaking at a durbar in Savelugu on October 31, Mahama highlighted the proposed market as a critical investment to transform the town into a major trading centre and stimulate economic growth in the region.

According to Mahama, the project forms part of the NDC’s broader agenda to improve infrastructure and economic opportunities in both rural and urban communities. The envisioned facility would offer traders a modern, spacious, and well-organised marketplace, attracting vendors and buyers from across the region and beyond.

“We plan to modernise the Savelugu market, transforming it into a hub for trade and commerce,” Mahama remarked. “The crowd that gathers here on market days shows the potential for growth. Through our Market Enhancement Programme, we will prioritise Savelugu, building a market that is not only functional but attractive to traders from all areas.”

He also referenced the Women’s Development Bank, an initiative in the NDC’s manifesto aimed at empowering women economically.

He reassured residents that one of the first branches of this bank would be established in the new Savelugu market, giving female traders easier access to financial support and business development resources.

As he encouraged the people of Savelugu to rally behind the NDC, Mahama stressed his party’s dedication to creating sustainable livelihoods and development avenues across the country, saying, “This market is more than a building—it is a bridge to opportunity for the people of Savelugu and the entire Northern Region.”
