President John Dramani Mahama has directed the Ministry of Roads and Highways to urgently prioritise the rehabilitation and completion of the Maaban-Goaso Highway, describing the road as a critical artery for regional development.
The directive was issued during President Mahama’s “Thank You Tour” in Goaso on Saturday, May 31, where he addressed enthusiastic residents and local leaders. The former president stressed the economic importance of the highway and other regional infrastructure, promising that construction works would soon resume.
“We will not abandon projects that were begun by the past government. We’re here to finish what we started and to build what is needed. We will soon have contractors back at work,” he said.

President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to continuing and completing all viable projects, regardless of which administration initiated them.
“Governance is continuity. We have taken inventory of all abandoned and uncompleted projects by all previous governments,” he revealed.
He noted that his administration is determined to ensure that critical infrastructure, particularly those with economic significance, is not left to waste.
The Maaban-Goaso Highway, a key road linking various towns and trade routes within the Ahafo Region, has long suffered neglect, with portions becoming nearly impassable during the rainy season. Mahama described it as a “crucial link for mobility and trade” and urged the Roads Ministry to treat it as a top priority.
In addition to the highway, the former president also called for the upgrading of town roads in Goaso, Kenyase, and Acherensua. These upgrades, he said, are necessary to accommodate urban expansion, reduce transportation risks, and promote socio-economic growth.
“These town roads should be upgraded to support urban growth and improve transport safety,” he added.
The completion of these roads is expected to significantly improve access to markets, health services, and schools while stimulating trade and job creation in the Ahafo Region. Residents and traders have long lamented the poor state of the roads, which they say has hindered productivity and increased vehicle maintenance costs.
Local chiefs and community members who welcomed Mahama to Goaso expressed optimism following his assurance. Many hope the former president’s directive will lead to swift action and permanent improvements to their road networks.
Mahama’s visit comes as part of a wider effort to reconnect with grassroots supporters and demonstrate his vision for inclusive national development.
His emphasis on completing existing projects—rather than starting anew—has resonated with communities frustrated by delays and political discontinuities in public works.
