Mahama Has Abandoned Galamsey Fight For Economic Gains – UTAG-KNUST President

The President of the University Teachers Association of Ghana (UTAG) at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor Eric Abavare, has launched a scathing attack on President John Dramani Mahama, accusing him of reneging on his campaign pledge to end illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.

In a Facebook post on Thursday, September 18, 2025, Prof. Abavare described the President’s recent comments on galamsey as a “betrayal” of Ghanaians, claiming Mahama now appears to justify the menace by emphasising its contribution to the economy.

“The conman didn’t know gold was the one commodity holding Ghana’s economy before the election and promised to root out galamsey? He just blatantly ignored his so-called social contract and is now justifying the galamsey menace,” he wrote.

The UTAG-KNUST president further questioned the government’s vision for safeguarding the future, insisting that prioritising short-term economic gains over environmental sustainability demonstrates a lack of foresight.

“My question to him is, what would be the essence of the existence of an economy if Ghanaians didn’t exist? What would posterity live on? This is the man who thinks Ghana will not exist after tomorrow and has no plans for the future of this country,” he added.

Prof. Abavare concluded that President Mahama’s stance exposes a disregard for long-term national survival, describing it as “pitiful” and a disservice to Ghana’s future generations.
