Mahama forms anti-flood taskforce to tackle Ghana’s flooding crisis

In response to the persistent flooding plaguing various parts of the country, President John Dramani Mahama has launched the Anti-Flood Taskforce, a special team tasked with implementing sustainable solutions to the crisis.

Chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff in Charge of Operations, Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, the task force brings together top government officials and security personnel to address Ghana’s longstanding flooding concerns. The Legal Counsel to the President, Marietta Brew, serves as the Secretary, with other notable members including the Minister for Water Resources, Works & Housing, Kenneth Gilbert Adjei; Minister for Local Government, Ahmed Ibrahim; National Security Coordinator, DCOP Abdul Osman Razak; and Deputy Director General of NADMO, Teddy Addi.

As part of its mandate, the task force recently conducted an aerial reconnaissance of flood-prone areas to assess vulnerable locations and strategise on preventive measures. The team surveyed key locations such as Weija, the Sakumo Ramsar Site, and the Tema Fishing Harbour area, collecting vital data for flood mitigation planning.

Speaking to the media on March 12, Chairman of the Taskforce, Stan Dogbe, emphasised the government’s commitment to enforcing stringent measures to curb flooding. He disclosed that the Local Government Ministry, in collaboration with the Ghana Armed Forces, would immediately commence the desilting of major drainage systems.

“The President is deeply concerned about the recurring floods, not only in Accra but across the country. This task force has been set up to provide immediate interventions and long-term strategies to mitigate the impact of flooding. Today, we conducted an aerial inspection of critical drainage channels requiring urgent attention,” Dogbe stated.

Brigadier General Richard Kinney, Commander of the Engineer Brigade of the Ghana Armed Forces, highlighted the role of public indiscipline in exacerbating flooding, citing construction in waterways as a major issue.

He stressed that stricter enforcement against illegal structures would be crucial in preventing future disasters.

With a focus on infrastructure improvement, policy enforcement, and public education, the Anti-Flood Taskforce is set to spearhead Ghana’s efforts in mitigating the devastating effects of floods.
