President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Prof. Doc. (Med) Ernest Yorke as a new board member of the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), marking a significant leadership shift at the institution responsible for overseeing Ghana’s national health insurance policy.
The appointment, officially communicated through a letter signed by the President’s Secretary, Dr Callitus Mahama, also confirmed the revocation of Anne Sansa Daly’s membership on the NHIA board.
Prof. Yorke, a distinguished medical practitioner and respected academic, brings decades of experience in clinical medicine and healthcare policy. He is expected to inject fresh insight into the Authority’s decision-making processes as it works to expand and improve access to health insurance across Ghana.

President Mahama has directed the Minister of Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to facilitate the immediate swearing-in of Prof. Yorke to ensure a smooth transition and uninterrupted board operations.
Though the official letter offered no specific reasons for Anne Sansa Daly’s removal, the development comes amid growing calls for renewed leadership and accountability within the NHIA, as Ghana grapples with health financing challenges and the need to improve service delivery.
Prof. Yorke’s appointment has been welcomed by several health sector stakeholders, who believe his clinical background and policy expertise could help realign the NHIA’s priorities with the government’s broader health agenda.
The NHIA board plays a crucial role in advising and guiding the authority on strategies, compliance, and stakeholder engagement, making the composition of its members central to the implementation of Ghana’s Universal Health Coverage ambitions.
