President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Dr George Kojo Owusu as the Acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the National Ambulance Service (NAS), following the dismissal of Dr Nuhu Zakaria. The appointment is in accordance with Article 195(1) of the 1992 Constitution and Section 18(1) of the National Ambulance Service Act, 2020 (Act 1041).
A statement from the Public Relations Unit of NAS, released on Thursday, July 11, 2025, confirmed the change in leadership. The statement was signed by Mr Simmons Yussif Kewura, Deputy Director of Public Relations.
Dr Owusu, a respected emergency physician specialist and chartered health administrator, brings over two decades of experience to the role. He holds a Master of Arts in Health Law and Ethics from the University of Ghana School of Law and has held key positions in both clinical practice and academic healthcare administration.

Until his appointment, Dr Owusu served as the medical director of health services at Takoradi Technical University, where he was instrumental in enhancing emergency preparedness and institutional healthcare delivery.
His appointment comes at a time when the NAS is intensifying efforts to expand its operational capacity, improve emergency response times, and ensure broader national coverage.
“The National Ambulance Service welcomes Dr Owusu’s appointment and expresses confidence in his leadership to drive innovation, institutional growth, and strategic reforms aimed at improving service delivery across all regions,” the NAS statement noted.
Management and staff of the NAS have pledged their full support as Dr Owusu assumes leadership of the agency. His tenure is expected to play a critical role in modernising Ghana’s emergency medical infrastructure and aligning the country’s pre-hospital care standards with international best practices.
