Former Member of Parliament for Awutu Senya East, Mavis Hawa Koomson, has expressed deep disappointment over the lack of solidarity shown by President John Dramani Mahama and Vice President Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang following the physical assault she suffered during the Ablekuma North parliamentary rerun.
Speaking on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen on Wednesday, Madam Koomson said she was particularly surprised that Ghana’s first female vice president had not reached out to her, despite the gendered nature of the violence she endured.
“As we speak, not even one of them has called me. I am very surprised that Vice President Naana Jane, as a woman, has not even called to check on me. I expected better,” she said.

According to the former Fisheries and Aquaculture Development Minister, not a single top government official, apart from members of her own New Patriotic Party (NPP), had shown concern after the incident.
“Not even the President or his Vice has shown concern. But today, we say we have a sitting female vice president,” she added.
However, she acknowledged that the Minister for the Interior, Mubarak Mohammed Muntaka, had contacted her privately. She commended him for taking an active interest in the case.
“He called and told me that they are taking the matter seriously. He said he has instructed the regional police commander to investigate thoroughly and bring those behind the attack to book,” she revealed.
Describing the Interior Minister as her “brother,” Madam Koomson called for swift justice and urged the ministry to ensure that those responsible are held accountable.
“I expect Muntaka, my own brother, to ensure the right thing is done. The men who assaulted me must face justice,” she insisted.
The incident occurred during the parliamentary rerun on July 11 at the St. Peter’s Methodist Church polling station in Odorkor. Unidentified assailants stormed the station, overpowering police officers and physically assaulting Koomson in a violent altercation captured on video. Footage shows her being pushed to the ground while attempting to defend herself with pepper spray.
The attack has sparked widespread public outrage, with renewed calls for increased security during elections and better protection for political figures—especially women.
Despite the trauma, Madam Koomson has vowed to continue her political advocacy and urged the public to speak up against political violence in all forms.
