Parts of the Madina Market in Accra were reduced to ashes in the early hours of Friday, September 19, 2025, after a fierce blaze ripped through several shops and wooden structures.
Eyewitnesses said the fire started around 1:00 a.m., quickly spreading through makeshift stalls and producing thick clouds of smoke that could be seen from afar. Traders and residents rushed to the scene but could only watch helplessly as their livelihoods were consumed by flames before firefighters arrived.
The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) confirmed that it received the emergency call at 1:36 a.m. Fire crews reached the market within two minutes but faced challenges due to the intensity of the fire and the absence of nearby hydrants. Four additional fire engines were dispatched to reinforce the response.
“The fire affected wooden structures, two corn milling shops, and nine containers,” the GNFS said in a statement. “It was confined at 3:07 a.m., brought under control at 3:19 a.m., and completely extinguished at 4:40 a.m.”
Despite the destruction, firefighters were able to stop the flames from spreading to a one-storey warehouse and other adjoining buildings, averting a larger disaster. No injuries or deaths were recorded.
The cause of the fire remains unknown, and investigations are currently underway.
In its statement, the GNFS assured the public of its commitment to safeguarding lives and property while urging greater cooperation from communities during fire emergencies.
