Former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Ing. Kwabena Agyei Agyepong, has thrown his hat into the ring for the party’s 2026 presidential primaries, positioning himself as the candidate to restore unity, integrity, and purpose within the party.
His announcement, made just hours after the NPP officially opened nominations on Tuesday, July 29, marks the first major declaration in what promises to be a high-stakes internal contest ahead of the 2028 general elections.
Speaking at a brief but impassioned declaration event, Agyepong said the NPP must rise above the growing influence of money in internal politics and return to its founding values of sacrifice and service.

“Politics belongs to the grassroots, belongs to the ordinary people. Not the petty squabble of contented partisan elites,” he told delegates and party members. “With me, KAA, the NPP has a clear path to unity and victory.”
Calling for “a pair of clean hands, a clear mind, and a compassionate heart” to lead both party and country, Agyepong vowed to lead a campaign that prioritises the party’s soul over personal ambition.
He also made a rare overture to former Trade Minister Alan Kyerematen, who broke away from the NPP ahead of the 2024 elections, urging him to return to the fold.
“This party was built on sacrifice, not privilege. It’s time to come home,” he said.
The declaration was attended by several party stalwarts, including former Members of Parliament like Dr. Bernard Okoe Boye, lending early credibility to Agyepong’s candidacy.
Meanwhile, NPP General Secretary Justin Frimpong Kodua has confirmed that nominations will close on August 28, 2025, with the primaries scheduled for January 31, 2026. Aspiring candidates are required to pay a nomination fee of GH₵100,000 and a filing fee of GH₵500,000.
Kodua also used the occasion to warn the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) against politicising the ongoing chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, accusing it of exploiting the situation for political gain during the 2024 campaign.
