Korle Bu Loses Nearly 300 Specialists to Brain Drain in First Half of 2025

The management of Korle Bu Teaching Hospital has raised alarm over the mass exodus of skilled health professionals, revealing that close to 300 specialists left the facility between January and June 2025 in search of better opportunities abroad.

Deputy Medical Director of the hospital, Dr Harry Akoto, disclosed the troubling figures during a needs assessment visit by the administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund—popularly known as MahamaCares.

He warned that the growing brain drain threatens to cripple healthcare delivery at Ghana’s premier referral centre if urgent steps are not taken to address the underlying causes.

“When we look at our data, we have approximately 300 people leaving between January and June this year. These are people who are highly skilled and highly specialised,” Dr Akoto explained in an interview with Citi News on Thursday, September 18.

According to him, the departures are largely driven by poor remuneration, limited training opportunities, and unsatisfactory working conditions.

“The issues are multifactorial; some are based on a poor work environment. But the chunk of it is remuneration. People feel they can get more out there than being here,” he added.

The revelation comes as the Ghana Medical Trust Fund embarks on a nationwide initiative to provide financial support for patients battling chronic and non-communicable diseases not covered by the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS).
