Ken Ofori-Atta Diagnosed With Cancer- OSP Reveals

The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP) has reissued a declaration of wanted status against former Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, despite receiving confirmation that he has been diagnosed with cancer.

According to Special Prosecutor Kissi Agyebeng, Mr. Ofori-Atta’s legal team, in a letter dated May 28, 2025, notified the OSP that he has been diagnosed with cancer and is scheduled to undergo treatment on June 13. The letter was cited as the reason for his inability to comply with the OSP’s summons for questioning in relation to ongoing investigations.

Addressing the media on Monday, June 2, Mr Agyebeng confirmed the receipt of the letter but questioned the validity of the excuse, stating that the OSP has not been provided with a supporting medical report to justify Mr Ofori-Atta’s absence from the country.

“By a letter dated 28 May 2025, Mr Ofori-Atta’s lawyer informed the special prosecutor that a medical expert has diagnosed Mr Ofori-Atta with cancer and has earmarked 13th June 2025 for treatment, for which reason he will be unable to return to the jurisdiction as scheduled,” Agyebeng stated.
“His lawyers stated that, to the knowledge of the OSP, this change in circumstance has been brought to the attention of the court before.”

Despite the explanation, the special prosecutor maintained that Mr Ofori-Atta’s continued failure to appear in person amounts to defiance of lawful authority. He emphasised that suspects under criminal investigation do not have the luxury of determining the terms of their engagement with law enforcement.

“We want him here physically, and we insist on it,” Agyebeng said.
“A suspect in a criminal investigation does not pick and choose how the investigative body conducts its investigations and the methods suitable to him and his convenience. We will not countenance this conduct — not in this case.”

As a result, the OSP has reinstated Mr Ofori-Atta’s status as a wanted person and declared him a fugitive from justice until he complies with the summons.

The former finance minister is currently under investigation by the OSP in connection with alleged financial improprieties during his time in office.
