JoyNews Reporter Carlos Carlony Recounts Assault by National Security During McDan Demolition Coverage

JoyNews journalist Carlos Carlony has detailed a harrowing encounter with National Security operatives who assaulted and detained him while he was covering the demolition of a warehouse reportedly owned by businessman Daniel McKorley, popularly known as McDan.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Midday News following his release, Carlony described how the incident unfolded as he was interviewing an eyewitness at the site before military personnel arrived.

“We got there before the military arrived,” he said. “I was speaking to an eyewitness when suddenly, sirens blared and the soldiers stormed the place, interrupting me mid-interview.”

Carlony said the operatives questioned why they were filming, to which he calmly responded that they were journalists on duty. Despite trying to engage the head of the team to clarify his role, the situation escalated.

“I was speaking to my producer, preparing to go on air, when a soldier approached me from behind and accused me of filming. He then landed two heavy blows to my neck from behind,” he recounted.

“I lost control and almost fell. There was no confrontation at all. We were simply doing our job.”

Following the assault, Carlony said he was told he was under arrest and was forced into a vehicle alongside McDan’s Group CEO and three others. They were transported to the National Security Headquarters.

At the facility, the detainees were held for approximately 45 minutes, during which time their phones were seized and searched.

“They came in, monitored us, asked me questions. I told them I was from JoyNews,” Carlony said. “They asked me to write a statement, but I insisted on speaking with my superiors first.”

The journalist’s account has intensified public outrage, especially after the Presidency condemned the assault, reaffirming its commitment to press freedom and journalist protection.

The government has since directed the Minister for Defence and the National Security Coordinator to launch a full investigation and sanction the officers involved.
