The 2024 flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, has dismissed claims that his Muslim faith played a role in the party’s defeat in the 2024 general elections, describing the narrative as unfounded and divisive.
Addressing party supporters at the NPP headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, ahead of a planned ‘Thank You Tour’, Dr Bawumia categorically rejected suggestions that religious identity influenced voting behaviour. He urged Ghanaians to rely on data and facts, not propaganda.
“When we finished the election, there were so many people who were giving different reasons why we lost. One of the reasons people offered was that they didn’t vote for us because our presidential candidate was Muslim. Have you not heard that? When I heard that, I said, This doesn’t make sense. This is not the Ghana that I know,” Dr Bawumia remarked.

He referred to his victory in the NPP’s presidential primaries as proof that religion was not a barrier, highlighting that he was the sole Muslim among ten contenders—nine of whom were Christians—and yet won by a significant margin.
Dr Bawumia also cited data from the general election, pointing out that he performed better in many constituencies than NPP parliamentary candidates who were Christians. “If religion were a factor, that wouldn’t be the case,” he stated.
Using Assin South as an example, he noted that he garnered more votes in the constituency than the incumbent MP, Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, a Christian, reinforcing his point that voters did not base their choices on religious affiliation.
He further referenced findings from independent research groups, including Global Info Analytics, which consistently showed that religion and ethnicity had no significant impact on the electoral outcome. “It’s only propaganda,” he said firmly. “All the research ruled out religion and tribe as factors.”
Dr Bawumia concluded his address by calling for national unity and discouraging identity politics. “We are one nation. Whether Muslim or Christian, we rise and move forward together,” he affirmed, emphasising the need to focus on shared progress rather than differences.
