“Is This the Heaven We Were Promised?”- Kennedy Agyapong

Former Member of Parliament for Assin Central and prominent New Patriotic Party (NPP) figure Kennedy Ohene Agyapong has voiced strong dissatisfaction with the current state of governance under President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.

In a post shared on his official X (formerly Twitter) account after an engagement with members of the Tertiary Students Confederacy (TESCON), the outspoken politician questioned the leadership direction taken by the new government within just three months of assuming office.

“They promised you heaven… But is this the heaven we’re seeing in just these first three months?” he asked. “Look around; this is only the beginning. Can you imagine what four years of this will bring?”

Agyapong, who was once a flagbearer hopeful in the NPP’s 2024 presidential primaries, said the current hardships being experienced under the Mahama-led administration are a far cry from the expectations of the Ghanaian people.

Despite his concerns, Agyapong encouraged NPP faithful—especially TESCON members—to remain resilient and committed to spreading the party’s message.

“Let us brace ourselves, draw strength from these trials, and rise above them,” he stated.
“To TESCON, I say this: Lead the charge. Take the message of the NPP from house to house. Speak to every soul you meet. Tell them the truth. Tell them our story. And with your efforts, I have no doubt we shall return.”

His message comes at a time when political discourse in the country is heating up, with critics increasingly scrutinising the Mahama government over economic challenges, alleged policy reversals, and governance style.

Kennedy Agyapong also used the opportunity to tout the achievements of the previous NPP administration, particularly the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy.

“The NPP has given the gift of free SHS to the youth of this country, opening doors to education and opportunities for those who otherwise may never have had a chance,” he wrote.

“This is a legacy we can all be proud of—one that will continue to change lives for generations to come.”

The Free SHS initiative, introduced in 2017 under former President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, has been one of the most widely discussed education reforms in Ghana’s Fourth Republic. While it drew praise for increasing access to education, it was also criticised for challenges related to infrastructure, quality, and funding.

Agyapong’s latest remarks add to a growing list of criticisms being levelled against the current administration, just three months after President Mahama returned to office.

The government, however, maintains that it inherited a difficult economy and is working steadily to restore macroeconomic stability.
