Officers of the Ghana Immigration Service at the Bunkpurugu Sector Command in the North East Region have intercepted 25 bags of cocoa beans being smuggled into neighbouring Togo through an unapproved border route.
The successful anti-smuggling operation, which took place around 10:00 p.m. on Sunday, April 6, followed a tip-off and was led by the Officer-in-Charge of the Bunkpurugu Command, ACI Rev. Edwin Adjetey Doku.

According to an official statement released on Monday, April 7, and signed by Rev. Doku, the operation was swiftly coordinated with his operations commander and eight other officers who moved to the Kauk border community to lay an ambush.
The officers intercepted two unregistered motor king tricycles carrying the contraband cocoa beans. In the process, 25 individuals on board the vehicles were arrested, and the bags of cocoa were seized.
“The swift action of our officers averted what could have been a successful smuggling operation into Togo,” the statement read.
The intercepted cocoa beans are currently in the custody of the Ghana Immigration Service at Bunkpurugu and are expected to be handed over to the Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for further investigation and necessary action.
This incident comes amid growing concerns about the illicit trade in cocoa and other agricultural products across Ghana’s eastern border, which authorities say undermines the country’s export earnings and threatens local livelihoods.
The operation team included the following officers:
- ACI Rev. Edwin Adjetey Doku (OIC)
- DSI Emmanuel D. Banyaa
- Insp. Solomon Dogbakye
- Asst. Inspt. Zakaria Haruna
- AICO I Philimon Kankamba
- AICO I Siaw Obrimpong
- AICO II Ernest Opuni
- AICO II Ernest Tabiri
- AICO II Rufai Alhassan
- AICO II Thomas Gamur
The Ghana Immigration Service has commended the officers for their vigilance and commitment to protecting the nation’s economic interests, pledging continued efforts to curb smuggling activities along Ghana’s borders.
