High Court restrains GRNMA From Continuing With Strike For 10 days
The Industrial and Labour Division of the High Court in Accra has placed a 10-day injunction on the nationwide strike by the Ghana Registered Nurses and Midwives Association (GRNMA), describing the industrial action as unlawful.
Presided over by Justice Priscilla Dikro Ofori, the court on Thursday, June 5, granted an ex parte application filed by the National Labour Commission (NLC), effectively ordering the immediate suspension of the strike.
“The respondent herein, its executives, officers, members, agents, servants, employees and other persons linked to the respondent are hereby injuncted or restrained from carrying on their illegal strike with immediate effect,” Justice Ofori ruled.

The GRNMA had declared the strike to protest what they described as persistent delays in implementing their 2024 Collective Agreement. In a letter dated May 29, 2025, they notified the NLC of their intent to withdraw services, citing issues with unpaid allowances, unresolved accommodation challenges, and increasing workload.
Despite mediation efforts led by the NLC under Section 138 of the Labour Act, the GRNMA defied the Commission’s directive to suspend all planned actions — including the wearing of red bands and the full-scale strike.
While the Ministry of Health, Ministry of Finance, and the Fair Wages and Salaries Commission (FWSC) honoured a June 4 meeting with the NLC, the GRNMA failed to attend and proceeded with the strike regardless.
The NLC responded swiftly, declaring the strike illegal and directing the association to return to work immediately. It also pointed out the GRNMA’s failure to adhere to legal procedures under Section 159 of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651), which outlines proper channels for initiating industrial action.
As the strike escalated, public health facilities across the country felt the impact. Some wards were left virtually empty, and patients struggled to access even basic services, prompting urgent appeals from the Ministry of Health.
The ministry warned that the continued absence of nurses and midwives could collapse the already overstretched public health system, urging them to return to the negotiation table in the national interest.
The injunction remains in force for 10 days. The NLC may seek an extension, but only through a formal notice to the GRNMA. In the interim, all striking members have been ordered back to work.
