The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has disclosed that one of the containers used to import one of the nine buses procured by the Ghana Football Association (GFA) for Division One League clubs also contained 40 mattresses.
The total expenditure associated with this container amounted to GHC 356,380.33.

The revelation, made in response to an inquiry from JoySports, raises questions about the intended purpose of the mattresses. It remains unclear whether they were meant for the revamped Ghanaman Soccer Centre of Excellence or another undisclosed destination.

Additionally, there is no confirmation as to whether the other eight containers that delivered the remaining buses also carried mattresses or other unreported items.
Last week, JoySports reported that some of the imported buses, valued at GHC 5,175,000, had not yet been registered due to missing documentation, according to some clubs. The report also highlighted that at least one of the Hyundai County buses arrived with other items in its shipping container, which had not been readily identified at the time.
However, further investigations have revealed that these additional items were medium-sized and student mattresses.
JoySports’ Muftawu Nabila Abdulai had formally requested details on the container’s contents from the GRA. While the response was received after the initial publication of the story, it has now been confirmed that the container carrying the used Hyundai County bus (black matte) also included 25 packs of medium-sized mattresses and 15 packs of student mattresses.
According to the GRA, the cost, insurance, and freight (CIF) value of the bus was GHC 212,783.08. Meanwhile, the 25 medium-sized mattresses were valued at GHC 32,597.50, and the 15 packs of student mattresses at GHC 14,027.29.

As reported in the March 4, 2025 publication, the total duty on the bus amounted to GHC 72,116.10. Additionally, the GRA’s breakdown of the duties on the mattresses showed that:
- The 25 medium-sized mattresses incurred a duty of GHC 17,000.86.
- The 15 student mattresses incurred a duty of GHC 7,311.63.
In total, the duty on the container’s contents amounted to GHC 96,972.46.
Thus, when adding the CIF value and duty, the total amount spent on the container, including its contents, reached GHC 356,380.33.

The discovery of the additional items in the shipment has prompted discussions about transparency in the procurement process and whether the GFA had properly disclosed all details of the importation to stakeholders. The football governing body is yet to comment on the matter.
