The Ministry of Education has announced that art, craft, and needlework will return to the curriculum for foundational learners across Ghana from the next academic year.
Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu made the announcement on Tuesday, August 5, 2025, during an engagement with home economics teachers from senior high schools in the Eastern Region.
He explained that the policy is part of ongoing curriculum reforms aimed at strengthening foundational learning and equipping pupils with hands-on, practical skills.

“We believe that a holistic education goes beyond core academic subjects. By reintroducing art, craft, and needlework, we are providing our youngest learners with the tools to develop their creative skills, critical thinking, and a deeper appreciation for our cultural heritage,” Mr Iddrisu stated.
The minister noted that the move is intended to prepare students for a future in which innovation and creativity will be as essential as literacy and numeracy.
The Ministry of Education said it will work closely with teachers, curriculum developers, and other stakeholders to ensure a smooth nationwide rollout of the programme.
This initiative marks a revival of practical skill training that had been significantly reduced in basic education over the past decades, with officials hoping it will spark renewed interest in Ghana’s arts and cultural heritage among young learners.
