Gov’t Not Selling ECG or NEDCo—Energy Minister Clears Air

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has dismissed reports suggesting that the government plans to sell the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) or the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

Addressing the presidential press corps on Friday, March 7, at Jubilee House, following President John Dramani Mahama’s second cabinet meeting, Mr. Jinapor clarified that the government is not privatising these state-owned power distributors.

“There is no decision to sell ECG or NEDCo. What we are considering is a strategic partnership to improve revenue collection and efficiency,” he stated.

He emphasised that ECG and NEDCo remain public assets, and any measures being explored are aimed at strengthening financial sustainability and service delivery.

“We understand the concerns, but let me assure Ghanaians that these institutions will continue to be state-owned. Any collaboration we pursue will be for efficiency, not privatisation,” he reiterated.

Mr. Jinapor urged the public to disregard false claims and assured that the government remains committed to providing reliable and affordable electricity services for all citizens.
