The government of Ghana has extended a heartfelt gesture of solidarity to the people of Palestine with the donation of 40 metric tonnes of premium cocoa products, including Golden Tree-branded chocolates, as part of a humanitarian effort amid the protracted crisis in Gaza.
At a ceremony held at the Jubilee House on Friday, August 1, 2025, President John Dramani Mahama personally handed over the consignment to Palestinian Ambassador to Ghana Abdul Fattah Ahmed Khalil al-Sattari.
President Mahama described the donation as both symbolic and substantive, stating that cocoa is not only a national treasure of Ghana but also a symbol of resilience, generosity, and warmth.
“Cocoa is one of Ghana’s most treasured natural commodities. It represents our national values of resilience, warmth, and generosity,” he said. “It is also a powerful superfood, rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and essential minerals. We hope this gesture brings nourishment and comfort to families in Gaza enduring unimaginable hardship.”
He reaffirmed Ghana’s historic ties with Palestine, referencing the opening of the Palestinian Liberation Organisation (PLO) office in Accra in 1986 and recent diplomatic engagements that continue to strengthen bilateral relations. President Mahama also reiterated Ghana’s unwavering support for a two-state solution that guarantees peaceful coexistence between Palestinians and Israelis.
“We remain firm in our support for a negotiated two-state solution in line with international law and UN resolutions,” the president stressed. “We also call on Israeli authorities to allow unimpeded access for humanitarian aid.”
The president commended the Palestinian community in Ghana for their contributions to national development, including the construction of school blocks in underserved communities, and thanked the Ghana Cocoa Board, the Cocoa Processing Company, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Regional Integration for facilitating the donation.
Ambassador Al-Sattari, visibly moved, expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the Palestinian people.
“This is more than chocolate. This is humanity,” he said. “If this chocolate arrives in Gaza, and it will arrive, and our people only see the chocolate, you cannot imagine how happy they will be. You cannot imagine how much more than happy they will be when they eat.”
He described the severe conditions in Gaza, noting that the region has been starved of aid and essentials for over two years due to the ongoing conflict and blockades. He also commended Ghana’s moral leadership and echoed appreciation to other countries like Egypt and France for advocating a peaceful resolution through the two-state model.
The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives from various humanitarian organisations.
President Mahama concluded the event with a heartfelt message: “To our brothers and sisters in Palestine, know that you do not walk alone. Ghana stands with you. May peace prevail.”
