Gaming Start-ups Deserve Bigger Revenue Share to Thrive- MTN Gaming Manager
MTN Ghana is taking bold steps to boost the country’s gaming industry, pledging stronger support for start-ups and homegrown developers.
At the MTN DigiFest 2025 Gaming Focus Group and Closing Session held at MTN Head Office, the company’s Manager for Video and Gaming, Yaw Antwi Boadu, outlined a roadmap designed to balance fair monetisation, player experience, and industry growth.
Boadu emphasised that treating start-ups the same as established gaming companies stifles growth. Instead, he proposed a tiered revenue-sharing system, where emerging developers enjoy a higher percentage to help them scale.

“For start-ups, the revenue is already small. If you give them an even smaller percentage, you cripple them at the very beginning. That’s why they need a bigger share, while larger developers with advanced technologies can be treated differently,” he explained.
Beyond revenue, MTN is offering developers the power of visibility. With over 18 million active subscribers, MTN’s digital platforms—including the MyMTN app—will serve as a hub for game hosting and promotion.
“Imagine publishing your game on MTN’s platform and instantly gaining millions of potential users discovering it. That visibility alone is a game-changer,” Boadu said, highlighting MTN’s commitment to positioning local developers before wider audiences.
Addressing one of the industry’s toughest challenges, Boadu warned against sacrificing user experience for aggressive monetisation. While in-app purchases and premium models are crucial, he stressed that balance is key.
“There’s a thin line between revenue and the gaming experience. If you prioritise money too much, you disrupt the fun. Developers need to keep the experience top-notch while ensuring sustainable revenue streams,” he cautioned.
Boadu urged developers to think more holistically about revenue opportunities. He explained that sustainable success requires looking beyond in-game payments to explore multiple revenue sources.
“Developers and publishers must look at all aspects of revenue generation—not just the game itself. That’s how you stay resilient,” he added.
Boadu also hinted at MTN’s growing interest in the eSports ecosystem and gaming academies, which he described as critical to nurturing the next wave of talent.
“I noticed the mention of an eSports gaming academy—if that’s your initiative, then I’d like to know more. Are they partners or sponsors? Because these are the kinds of platforms that will shape the future of gaming in Ghana,” he remarked.
As the DigiFest 2025 gaming sessions wrapped up, Boadu called for stronger partnerships across developers, publishers, and industry stakeholders. His message was clear: Ghana’s gaming industry must grow on fair terms, with innovation matched by opportunity.
“Start-ups must be empowered, players must enjoy their games, and revenue models must sustain the industry. That’s the only way forward,” he concluded.
