Former Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari Dies at 82

Former President of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, has passed away at the age of 82. His death was confirmed on Saturday, July 13, 2025, by his former aide, Bashir Ahmad, in a post on X (formerly Twitter).

“The family of the former president has announced the passing on of the former president, Muhammadu Buhari, GCFR, this afternoon in a clinic in London. May Allah accept him in Aljannatul Firdaus. Amin”, the message read.

Buhari, who served as Nigeria’s civilian president from 2015 to 2023 and earlier as military head of state from 1983 to 1985, died while undergoing medical care in London. Funeral arrangements will be communicated by the family in accordance with Islamic burial rites.

Born on December 17, 1942, in Daura, Katsina State, Buhari joined the Nigerian Army in 1961. He received military training in Nigeria, the United Kingdom, India, and the United States, rising through the ranks to become a Major General.

During his early military and political career, Buhari served as military governor of North Eastern State, later becoming federal commissioner for petroleum resources under General Olusegun Obasanjo’s regime.

In December 1983, Buhari overthrew the civilian government of Shehu Shagari in a military coup, becoming Head of State until his ousting in August 1985. His military rule was noted for its authoritarian policies, including the infamous War Against Indiscipline and clampdowns on the press.

Buhari re-entered Nigeria’s democratic space as a presidential contender, running unsuccessfully in 2003, 2007, and 2011, before winning the 2015 election as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate. His victory over then-incumbent Goodluck Jonathan marked the first peaceful transfer of power from one Nigerian president to another through the ballot box.

He was re-elected in 2019, defeating Atiku Abubakar, and served until May 2023.

Buhari’s presidency was defined by his strong anti-corruption stance, economic reforms, and an aggressive campaign against the Boko Haram insurgency. However, his administration also drew criticism for economic stagnation, high inflation, long health-related absences abroad, and alleged human rights violations by security forces.

His leadership style, sometimes called “Buharism”, retained echoes of his military past, emphasising discipline and austerity over democratic flexibility.

President Buhari was married to Safinatu Yusuf from 1971 until their divorce in 1988, with whom he had five children. He later married Aisha Halilu in 1989, and they also had five children together.
