Foreign Ministry Assures Safe Return and Reintegration of Deportees from the U.S.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has announced it is taking active steps to ensure the safe return and reintegration of Ghanaians being deported from the United States amid a surge in immigration enforcement under President Donald Trump’s administration.

Since the beginning of Trump’s second term, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has arrested over 3,500 undocumented immigrants nationwide. Deportation flights — some reportedly operated by U.S. military aircraft — have resumed at full scale. Among the affected are 160 Ghanaian nationals who now face imminent deportation.

Speaking at a press briefing in Accra ahead of the ECOWAS at 50 launch, Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, confirmed that Ghana’s diplomatic missions, particularly its embassy in Washington, are monitoring the situation closely and are fully engaged in providing necessary support.

“The number, as we have received from our foreign service officials, is that about 160 Ghanaians are on the deportation list, and the deportation exercise is ongoing,” he revealed.

Hon. Ablakwa emphasised that the ministry, guided by humanitarian principles and respect for human rights, is deliberately refraining from publicly disclosing personal details of the affected individuals.

“For us, on the grounds of humanitarian reasons and human rights, we have decided not to publicise information about them. So, when they arrive, our team welcomes them, helps them with integration, and connects them with their families,” he said.

He added that government agencies and civil society partners are collaborating behind the scenes to ensure a smooth and dignified process for the returnees.

“We are working with other partners quietly because it is important that we respect the dignity of our fellow compatriots and not expose them to media coverage,” he noted.

According to the Pew Research Centre, the U.S., which hosts a population of approximately 341 million people, is home to about 11 million undocumented immigrants. The Trump administration’s intensified efforts to reduce this number have left many foreign nationals — including Ghanaians — vulnerable to sudden deportation.

The Foreign Ministry’s reassurance comes at a time when concerns are growing within the Ghanaian diaspora and among families back home. Many have called on the government to enhance reintegration support and provide clear communication channels for those affected.

As deportations continue, the ministry’s approach underscores a balance between diplomacy, compassion, and the fundamental rights of citizens, both at home and abroad.
