Five people have been confirmed dead following a fatal road accident at Asikuma Junction in the Asuogyaman District of the Eastern Region, the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has reported.
In a post on its official Facebook page, the Service said a rescue team, led by AstnO Fred Aganu and accompanied by the Acting District Fire Officer, ADO I Godwin Gbedemah, was dispatched from the Peki Fire Station after receiving a distress call.
The crash involved a grey Toyota Noah with registration number GX 422-25 and a tipper truck with registration number GT 725-19.
According to the GNFS, nine people were involved in the accident. Out of the total number, four victims, including a minor, were rescued alive and rushed to the Peki Government Hospital for treatment by personnel from the National Ambulance Service.
Tragically, five others were found unresponsive and have since been handed over to the police for further procedures.
The cause of the accident is yet to be officially determined, but authorities have launched investigations to establish the circumstances leading to the collision.
The GNFS has reiterated its call for motorists to exercise caution on the roads, particularly along highways in the Eastern Region, where several fatal crashes have been recorded in recent months.
