Finance Minister’s 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review delayed amid minority caucus protests

The much-anticipated presentation of the 2024 Mid-Year Budget Review by Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has been delayed in Parliament due to the absence of the minority caucus. Channel One News’ Parliamentary correspondent, Nii Ayikwei Okine, reports that Minority MPs are protesting the delayed release of their common fund, which they argue is essential for fulfilling their parliamentary duties.

Dr. Amin Adam is scheduled to present the 2024 mid-year budget review today, Tuesday, July 23, 2024. The review aims to update Parliament on the implementation of the government’s 2024 budget and provide revised financial plans and an updated economic outlook for Ghana.

In a statement released on Monday, July 22, the Ministry of Finance outlined that the review would cover the government’s economic and fiscal performance for the first half of the year. Key areas to be addressed include growth measures, revenue, expenditure performance, financing, and debt sustainability.

However, the minority members have expressed their dissatisfaction with the delay in disbursing the common fund, which they deem vital for the execution of their responsibilities. Despite the tension, the Member of Parliament for Dormaa East, Paul Twum-Barimah, clarified to Nii Ayikwei Okine that the minority members are in a caucus meeting and are not boycotting the Finance Minister’s presentation.

As the situation unfolds, the delay underscores the importance of timely fund disbursement for effective parliamentary function and highlights ongoing fiscal challenges. The House awaits the Finance Minister’s update, which is crucial for understanding the government’s economic strategy and ensuring fiscal transparency and accountability.
