Former Chief Justice Justice Gertrude Torkornoo has filed a judicial review application at the High Court challenging her removal as a Justice of the Supreme Court by President John Dramani Mahama.
In her application, Justice Torkornoo argues that the action was unlawful since the recommendation for her removal related to her position as Chief Justice — a process she insists is entirely distinct from that governing the removal of a Justice of the Supreme Court.
She is seeking:

- An order of certiorari to quash President Mahama’s September 1, 2025 warrant of removal, which she contends contravenes constitutional provisions on the removal of Superior Court judges.
- A declaration that the President has no power to remove a Justice of the Superior Courts except in strict compliance with Article 146 of the 1992 Constitution.
Justice Torkornoo maintains that the removal was unconstitutional, unlawful, null and void.
