Founder and CEO of the Esports Academy, Maximus Ametorgah, has called for the institutionalisation of esports education in Ghana’s schools to nurture talent and build a sustainable pipeline of professional gamers for the country.
Speaking at the MTN DigiFest 2025 Gaming Focus Group and Closing Session at the MTN Head Office, Mr Ametorgah argued that esports has grown beyond being just entertainment and now stands as a viable career path and industry worth investing in.
“We all have talent, but the real question is, how do we nurture it for the future? Imagine if, just like science classes in secondary schools, we also had esports classes,” he said. “That way, we can begin developing talent right from the secondary and university levels.”
According to him, introducing esports into the formal education system would ensure that Ghana has a consistent pool of skilled players to feed into national and international tournaments.
“With a structured programme, each year we would not have to scramble to scout for players. Instead, we would have a ready pool of talented young people, properly trained, and available to represent the country,” Mr Ametorgah explained.
He emphasised that esports, when given equal recognition as traditional sports, could unlock new career opportunities, enhance digital literacy, and position Ghana as a hub for competitive gaming in Africa.
“Without a doubt, when we support esports education, we create more opportunities for our youth, and we grow more talent,” he added.
